The research team used data points from food frequency questionnaires that were given to the participants at the beginning of the study. The questionnaires were designed to allow researchers the ability to assess how often the participants ate any of the 144 foods that were on the list.

The middle-aged participants were categorized into five subgroups, which were based on their greens consumption. Six servings of fruits and vegetables constituted a “high” category or intake rate, with the lowest being those who consumed only two servings daily.
When analyzing the fruit intake, a similar approach was taken with the highest group consuming three daily servings compared to the lowest group, which only ate half a serving.
From the study participants who consumed the highest levels of greens intake, only 6.6% of them saw a decline in brain function. On the other hand, 7.9% of men in the study who ate the least amount of greens developed poor cognitive brain function.
