Take Greens Powders To Increase Productivity And Give You The Mental Edge

Get More Done

In recent years greens powders have gained increasing popularity amongst not only health-conscious people but the general public as a whole.

The benefits of drinking greens powders are many, but the one positive consumers continually report after taking green supplements is the increased mental clarity and freshness they feel.

Several studies of late have started to shed light on just how beneficial greens powders are in providing a boost to cognitive function, productivity, and concentration.

Here we will take an in-depth look at two of those studies and examine expert opinion by some of the most preeminent professionals in the field of nutrition and cognitive research.

Journal Of Neurology

The Journal of Neurology recently reported some very positive research regarding greens and the potent power they have on slowing age-related disease and at the same time improving cognitive ability (1).

Researchers from Rush University in Chicago and the Tufts Nutrition Research Centre in Boston carefully tracked 960 adults who were older in age and were members of the Rush Memory and Aging Project.

The research focused specifically on the intake of greens such as kale, spinach, and lettuce and the protection they provide the body in terms of cognitive decline. The research team also studied the impact that consuming greens has on cognitive tests and activities.

The participants had an average age of 81 years, and at the beginning of the study, all the members were free of dementia and other age-related cognitive diseases. The participants undertook a variety of cognitive tests and activities over five years.

The tests were categorized into five different domains: episodic memory, working memory, semantic memory, visuospatial ability, and perceptual speed.

The research team used data points from food frequency questionnaires that were given to the participants at the beginning of the study. The questionnaires were designed to allow researchers the ability to assess how often the participants ate any of the 144 foods that were on the list.

Below is an example of the leafy greens in the questionnaire and the serving size of the foods:

  • Spinach (1/2 cup cooked).
  • Kale/collards/greens (1/2 cup cooked).
  • Lettuce salad (1 cup raw).

Information on health, diet, social factors, and demographics was also additionally collated after each yearly visit.

The study found a significant positive impact and correlation between leafy greens’ intake and the slowing of cognitive decline in the participants.

When comparing the rate of brain function decline between those who consumed 1.3 daily servings of greens instead of those who consumed 0.09 servings, those who consumed the higher amount were the equivalent to being 11 years younger in terms of cognitive function.

The nutrients were found to have a significant effect on the body. They were positively associated with the slowing of cognitive function, improving memory, and, more importantly, were found to have no adverse side effects (2).

The study shows the powerful, potent effect eating leafy greens has on our cognitive function and its role in slowing the onset of age-related disease.

As such, they recommended implementing at least a minimum of one daily serving into your dietary intake to keep your brain functioning efficiently.

Expert Opinion

Let’s take a look at what some of the World’s top experts on Nutrition and Cognitive Performance have commented about the significant health benefits of consuming greens and improving cognitive performance (4).

The Head of Research at the Alzheimer’s Society, Dr. James Pickett, has commented.

“It’s no secret that eating vegetables is beneficial for your health. This study found eating food rich in vitamin K – like spinach, kale, asparagus, and everyone’s favorite, Brussels sprouts – appears to slow cognitive decline as people age.”

Another top expert based at the Alzheimer’s Research Unit, Dr. Sara Imarision has said ;

Fruits and vegetables are a vital component of a nutritionally balanced diet, but figures suggest that many of us struggle to eat our five-a-day. As well as helping to support our overall physical health, this research adds to evidence of a link between a diet rich in vegetables and a healthy brain.Dr. Sara Imarision

Evidence shows that middle-aged men who consume fruits and dark leafy greens as part of their daily nutritional plan may significantly reduce their cognitive decline chances.

Latest Research Evidence On The Benefits Of Greens

In one study, researchers tracked more than 27,000 participants for nearly 20 years. The participants were 51 years of age. Researchers checked in on the participants every four years and asked them to answer a specifically designed questionnaire regarding their greens and fruit intake.

The results led researchers to find that those participants who had consumed a high level of greens and fruits compared to those who had eaten less were on average 17% less likely to be affected by cognitive decline and 34% less likely to have more significant mental adverse effects.

Interestingly, men in the study who consumed large amounts of orange juice over the years were 47% less likely to be affected by the age-related cognitive function compared to their counterparts who drank significantly less orange juice.

Researchers provided questionnaires specifically designed to measure memory and reasoning skills that assessed the impact of eating habits on cognitive function later in life. Some of the questions asked to the participants were:

  • If they had difficulty following directions
  • Whether they forgot basic things like items on a shopping list
  • If they were getting lost on roads, they were familiar with

Researchers reported 58% of the men in the study had excellent cognitive function and memory skills, 38% showed intermediate ability, and 7% showed a meager ability regarding brain function and memory.

The middle-aged participants were categorized into five subgroups, which were based on their greens consumption. Six servings of fruits and vegetables constituted a “high” category or intake rate, with the lowest being those who consumed only two servings daily.

When analyzing the fruit intake, a similar approach was taken with the highest group consuming three daily servings compared to the lowest group, which only ate half a serving.

From the study participants who consumed the highest levels of greens intake, only 6.6% of them saw a decline in brain function. On the other hand, 7.9% of men in the study who ate the least amount of greens developed poor cognitive brain function.

This particular study is an excellent example of fruits and greens that can dramatically affect our overall health, brain function, and memory loss.

The research clearly demonstrates vegetables, particularly greens, help protect the brain and slow cognitive decline. Hannah Gardener, who is employed by the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine as a researcher, said,

Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins and nutrients, including antioxidants, that can help protect the brain from oxidative stress and preserve healthy vascular function that is important for cognitive health
