2020 was unquestionably a year that has affected the lives of millions and millions of people around the world. COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdowns have damaged people and businesses economically, physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Working from home was an entirely new experience for many people and a large portion of those struggled to come to terms with it. The lack of human interaction, coupled with the doubt and uncertainty over job security, weighed heavily on many people.
In this blog, I will look at the heavy toll the lockdowns have had on people mentally, with many experiencing chronic stress and anxiety for the first time in their lives.
I will help you take your power back and affect those things around you in a constructive way and be the leader today in your own life before attempting to influence another.
I will provide strategies to help you find your center again and combine everything you know into what’s right and true; it’s how the world changes, how you change the very essence of who you are and begin to project positively in the world.
But first, let’s take a look at chronic burnout.
What Is Burnout?
Chronic burnout is a real problem and can affect people from all walks of life; whether you’re a professional athlete, a student, a busy office worker, or a mother, modern-day responsibilities can overwhelm us, and feelings of emptiness and despair can take over.
The World Health Organization (1) defines burnout using three characteristics:
- Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion
- Increased mental distance from one’s job or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job
- Reduced professional efficacy
Many people experiencing burnout report significant decreases in motivation and performance and start to feel entirely overwhelmed by even the smallest tasks.
But, at what point does hard work and effort turn into burnout, and how can it be stopped?
What Causes Burnout?
There are numerous causes of burnout, making it very difficult for Health Care Professionals to diagnose. It is commonly thought to stem from work overload or the inability to deal with stress effectively.
Specific personality characteristics are also thought to be significant factors in the cause of chronic stress or burnout.
Below are a few characteristics that may help you recognize if you are at risk:
- A perfectionist mindset – nothing is ever good enough
- Equating work performance to self-worth
- Feeling inadequate and unable to contribute
- Feeling unappreciated
- Lack of family or friends as a support network
24/7 access to technology and social media means we collaborate more than we ever have. This constant bombardment of communication and collaboration can be overwhelming and leave you feeling stressed and burnt out (2).
What Can Be Done About Burnout?
Identifying the symptoms you are displaying is a critical component in preventing burnout.
Looking internally and asking yourself questions such as, “how bad is the situation”? or “how important will this be five years from now?” can help you start identifying the causes of your burnout.
Strategies such as “Self-Compassion,” which requires demonstrating kindness and understanding when dealing with your failings, go along way to fight against stress and burnout.
Common thinking traps such as labeling, black and white thinking, and overgeneralizing are likely to negatively affect your mental health.

Steps To Becoming A Great Leader
You need to begin the process by getting at the root of the problem and asking why I am struggling? What factors are holding me back? The answers to these questions are vital as they form the foundation of your plan moving forward.
The reason most people struggle is hard work or lack thereof. It’s time to make a change. It’s time to stop the fear of failure, ruining your progress. As Einstein said,
insanity is doing the same thing over again and again and expecting a different result.Einstein
I want you to improve, to succeed, and rediscover your instincts to become better. Start using “fear” as a motivator to drive you closer to your goals.
Like Master Yoda says,
Do or do not; there is no try.Yoda
Remember; the greatest champions are soaked in sweat at the point of exhaustion while no-one else is around.
A goal is an accomplishment or a specific standard you want to achieve. When striving to achieve anything, setting goals is critical to your outcome’s success. Goals help you plan, evaluate, and effectively manage your behavior to reach your target.
Setting goals allows you to focus on specific tasks at hand. They develop your ability to work harder and help with perseverance in the face of adversity.
BREAKING OLD HABITS
Focus your attention on creating “new “habits. Our bodies are synergistically connected physically and emotionally. The connections that take place trigger behaviors that help create new patterns.”We are what we repeatedly do; excellence then is not an act, but a habit.”
Past behaviors/habits are hard to break, so focus your attention on building new ones.
Achieving your goals requires an immense amount of determination and courage. Have confidence; you can overcome adversity and strive for your dreams with unrelenting self-confidence and commitment.
Setbacks are inevitable. Don’t let them hold you back.
Don’t let it get you down. Get back on track and move forward one small step at a time.
The famous basketball coach John Wooden was quoted as saying,
seek the small improvements one step at a time, that’s the only way it happens, and when it happens, it lasts.John Wooden
Pull all the events of 2020 back in; because at the end of the day, they are just events, flashes; they’re grains of sand on the beach of eternity.
The things you think are so vitally important are not as important as keeping the core of who you are intact.
Remember; If you’re one of those highly critical of your own performance, don’t take that too far, be as forgiving of yourself as God is of you.
It’s doing the small things that really matter; the smallest of the small really do matter; In physics, it’s referred to as the: “butterfly effect.”
It’s sparked by a tiny change in one part of the world; the flapping of a butterfly’s wings in the right place at the right time can create a hurricane on the other side of the planet; it’s a law of physics.
From today forward, be that butterfly, be those flapping wings, recognize there’s power in that, there’s unlimited power in every choice you make.
When you flap your wings and do it with intention, hurricanes can happen on the other side of the world.
